Although the Jubilee is a six-piece jazz band, recently it has performed as a quintet and even as a quartet. This is due to a shortage of musicians, and funding problems due to reduced audiences at most performances. George Rutherford (double bass) for example, has been unable to participate recently and other musicians have been away quite a bit. The good news is that George has high hopes of performing with the band again soon. Meanwhile the band says "thank you" to John Shenton (double bass) for helping out when he can. The other good news, mentioned in an earlier posting, is that there was a record audience attendance at Monroe's Carvery on 1st February.
9th February 2011. The Jubilee Jazz Band regrets to announce that, due to a change of management, the residency at Restaurante La Hípica has ended. Any fans/customers who are disappointed by the sudden cancellation of events are urged to accept the band's sincerest apologies.
Staff at Monroe's and musicians from the band were delighted to see a bumper audience (a record high?) attending the Tuesday night session on 1st February. The restaurant was pretty much full and the waitresses were scrurrying to satisfy all the orders. The Jubilee says "Thank you for coming and supporting us, and please, come back soon!"
It was very cheery to see George Rutherford (double bass) and his long-standing sweetheart Juana Ruttherford (Only married 70 years!) in the audience. George and Juana have been poorly, so it was wonderful to see them getting about again. Perhaps George will play with the band again before long. Some fine guest artists who were able to join in included Abbie Hilton and Melda Hilton (clarinet and vocals respectively) plus Ed, the mystery singer who suddenly jumped up to sing Ain't Misbehavin', with perfect intonation and phrasing. Well done everyone! The hero of the evening was replacement bass player John Shenton who travelled up from Calpe to reinforce the rhythm section. Just as well because, sadly, Christian Gibaud (drums) was not present either, due to a hospital run he was obliged to make. Christain will be back in two weeks time of course. The regular musicians attending the event were: Patrick Clancy (piano & vocals), Dick Crooks (clarinet, alto sax & vocals), Michael Kasche (trombone), and Mike Summers (trumpet & vocals). The next session at Monroe's is Tuesday 22 February 2011, but meanwhile the band is performing at Restaurante La Hípica en Javea on Tuesday 15 February. |
